S3 storage for database backup files
Why Use S3 (instead of EBS)
The use of AWS S3 storage to store SQL Server backups makes sense
- it is significantly cheaper than EBS
- One can encrypt what’s stored
- One can manage backup file retention and lifecycle using inbuilt functionality.
Map the drive
To make your life easier working with S3 based backups, it would be good to map a local drive to a S3 storage bucket (effectively make it appear like a regular windows drive). Cloudberry Lab’s Drive (server edition – US$ 59.99) lets you easily backup to an S3 storage bucket and then restore a database from it.
