Recovering from severe Bloating and Constipation (usually after antibiotics)
Antibiotics – especially an overdose of – may cure your immediate bacterial infection. However, it will leave you without any friendly bacteria (in your digestive tract – starting from your mouth – all the way to your gut).
As you know, the gut is the most important brain in your body. Without it, even the brain up there doesn’t get the nutrients it needs. Hence, a compromised gut, leads to various symptoms including brain fog and lethargy.
These symptoms (for me) began a week or so AFTER the antibiotic treatment was over. They lasted well over a month (about 6 weeks) – and here is what I did to get around them (and restore my gut flora).
Symptoms
- Severe Severe Bloating – like stomach and abdomen feel ROCK solid. Absolutely no movement in stomach.
- Loss of any movement in the stomach (no bacteria means the intestinal contractions slow down/stop). Bacteria help with peristalsis – in the absence of beneficial bacteria, the gut doesn’t MOVE!
- No gurgling sounds in stomach (these sounds are actually a good thing). Again, this was due to a) lack of peristalsis b) lack of acid production
- Constipation ( Severe) – Since there is little or no intestinal movement.
- Loss of appetite
- Aversion to Hot Liquids, Sore burning feeling in stomach (this is NOT acidity – but an allergic reaction to foods that are not properly digested – due to lack of beneficial bacteria).
- Lack of ANY digestive juices – including saliva.
- Several MOOD, energy and respiratory related symptoms can be part of this stage..
Possible Causes of the Symptoms
- Low beneficial bacteria (top cause)
- Slow gut movements (slow peristalsis, a side effect of low good bacteria)
- Yeast Overgrowth – also due to antibiotics use
- Low Acid Production
Good Bacteria Restoration
A single probiotic, no matter how good, is not as effective as a few spread out probiotics. It is better to rotate and consume different probiotics, instead of sticking with one.
- Foods – Sauerkraut (one of the fastest working probiotics) instantly brought some gurgling sounds back. Sauerkraut, apart from providing good bacteria, also manages to restore stomach acid levels (if they are low). This post has a lot more to say about which foods to try.
- VSL3 – This is an ‘industrial strength’ probiotic – and one that I found much more effective than regular brands.
- Coconut Water

Keep the fungus at bay
Supplementing with good probiotics is only part of the equation for restoring beneficial bacteria. One needs to also curtain the overgrowth of yeast (candida) that flourishes in the aftermath of an antibiotic treatment. These are some TOP destroyers of candida – and good at restoring the yeast balance as well. Keep rotating these – as Candida can adapt to any single anti-fungal.
- S. BoullardiiSaccharomyces Boulardii Saccharomyces Boulardii – This is a GOOD yeast – one that takes over from the bad overgrowth of candida.
- Garlic – This is (one of) the strongest enemies of yeast. A good way to test if you are suffering from yeast overgrowth is to see if raw garlic relieves your bloating any.
- Oregano Oil – While this is very effective, I am wary of using this regularly – since it also destroys good fungus along with bad fungus.
- Coconut Oil – Never tried this – but heard from people that it is a strong anti-candida agent.
- Flucanazole – A very strong anti fungal – and usually one feels relief within 24 hrs. By prescription only. Again, in my experience, S. Boullardii and Garlic are very effective
Low Acid Production in Stomach
After all, the gurgling sounds were supposed to be acid in the stomach – and I had NO gurgling sounds whatsoever. Once again, Sauerkraut provides a quick fix. However, if low acid IS the culprit, there’s an easier way to tell.
Simply have a BETAINE HCL (with PEPSIN) capsule with your meal – and see how NORMAL you feel for the next couple of hours. If there is no bloating / discomfort, you have low acid production. You were low in acid to begin with. In my case, not only did I feel normal after the Betaine capsule, it also restored my appetite, the gurgling sounds (which is just acid swooshing around).
Here is a post that lets you determine whether your stomach has low levels of acid.
Slow Peristalsis
While restoring good bacteria restores some of the intestinal movement as well, there is a quicker way to restore this. HOT WATER – Sipped slowly. Read my patented hot water remedy. DGL (DeGlycerized Licorice) helps with a variety of digestive ailments – and I added it to my daily pre-meal ritual to overcome my complete loss of appetite. It seemed to really help.
How I went about it
- In the morning, I took Betaine HCL 500 mg (with Pepsin) on an empty stomach. This got my digestive juices flowing. I could hear gurgling sounds again – which was a HUGE relief.
- After about an hour, I took the probiotics of choice (VSL 3 or coconut kefir). Also , took one dose of Saccharomyces Boulardii about this time.
- 20 minutes prior to each meal, I would chew 2 DGL (DeGlyccerized Licorice) tablets
- With each meal, I would take an additional Betaine HCL (with pepsin)
These 4 are the top recommendations for getting somewhat instant relief – so you can regain some appetite . At the same time, the probiotics and S Boullardi and DGL are also providing long term healing.
Summary
When your gut flora is messed up, you are not eating well or digesting well. This has an effect on your entire body and mind. You are unable to even think clearly (brain fog). This makes it even harder to decipher the underlying causes of your symptoms. It is all too easy , for example, to believe that you are having a bronchitis attack – when, in reality, you are experiencing an allergic reaction to certain foods (because of your gut imbalance). Because you are not really thinking clearly, you may very easily attribute your symptoms to something other than digestion – and start taking inhalers etc. (as I did). However, as I realized, when my gut flora returned, so did my mental clarity. As did my (up) moods. It takes 4-6 weeks for the balance to be fully restored. However, with a severe yeast overgrowth, there may be additional dietary considerations to keep in mind. Generally though, with a few yeast killers and a few good probiotics, you can be well on your way to a full recovery.
The four top supplements that got me over the most difficult hump were
- Betaine HCL (with Pepsin)
- VSL3 Probiotic
- Saccharomyces Boulardii
- DGL
Appendix A – Stimulating the Appetite
- Nux Vomica – A homeopathic medicine – especially suited for restoring appetites that have been ruined by abuse (too much rich foods, too much caffeine etc.)
- Swedish Bitters – Good for stimulating digestion.
- Sauerkraut – for me – started working right away at restoring the good bacteria. I also had some coconut kefir probiotics, but sauerkraut worked faster. In addition, I tried my patented ‘reduced’ hot water remedy. Within two days, I heard the gurgling sounds in my stomach again.
Appendix B – The Role Of Exercise
In the past, whenever I was bloated or constipated, I would run. A 30 minute run would fix me. This is what happens in a case of ‘normal’ bloating or indigestion. With a severe imbalance of gut flora, the situation is different. Exercise makes little, or no difference. I remember running for an hour non-stop – in the end, I was still bloated, and still had NO appetite. This happened day after day. This was very confusing – since ANY exercise would typically stimulate my appetite. However, in my experience, this condition is not helped particularly by exercise.
Appendix C – Mood and Digestion
I am of the conviction that almost ALL moods are related to the state of your digestive health. At least for me, that seems to hold true. Moods are not these mysterious things that appear and disappear after a few hours. For me, there seems to be a strong correlation between my digestive health and my moods.
Appendix D – Respiration and Digestion
You will experience allergic reaction to various foods – when you lack the bacteria to digest those foods. It will seem like allergies – and even cause respiratory symptoms. For me, there were severe breathing issues – including inability to inhale fully or exhale fully. These ranged from mild to severe. These were not my typical asthma attacks (I had acute asthma as a teenager – so am aware of what that sounds like).
Appendix E – Brain Fog and Digestion
This is one of THE most disabling symptoms of dysbiosis (imbalance of gut bacteria). One cannot think clearly – and this makes it even harder to decipher the underlying causes of your symptoms.
Hi Anju

How many days it took for you to get back to good gut?
I am on probiotics vsl3
And miralax for constipation abdominal bloating and pain caused by low good bacteria
After reading your blog I started eating sauerkraut
Is there any thing that you suggest me to do according to your experiences
?
I would like to talk to you
Hey that sounds like a good protocol. I want to try these vsl I actually read about them before coming here. Started femDophilis they are always almost sold out at Whole Foods. is there a signif difference in vsl?
I started Swedish bitters and it works wonders. Defhelps food digest but helps with the constipation. I reckon it helps get your digestive juices flowing and breaks down the food. It activates peptic acid centers all throughout gut as well. It’s helped balance me out. Took a month and now Levaquin has been all messed up.
1. Is vsr a big difference from regular probiotics?
2 try Swedish bitters. They’ve helped me for sure.
3. I saw a difference in about a month after trying to regulate my gut/ and feminine bacteria as well.
Now have to start over!
Can I start therapy for constipation like the sauerkraut while still on the Doxycyclene?
Well, you could, but the antibiotics would kill any beneficial bacteria. The only thing that works ALONGSIDE taking antibiotics is S. Boullardi. Since it isn’t a bacteria, it survives the antibiotics – and still has beneficial effects on your gut flora.
Hope that helps
I have severe acid reflux from raw garlic. But I’m going to try everything else. How about diatomaceous earth? Does this help?
I’ve been on major antibiotics 4x’s in the last 3 years and this past round (major ear infection) pushes me over the top. My stomach is like a rock. Extremely uncomfortable. Doctors ignore me.
Praying this works.
I am sorry to hear that. I have no experience with diatomaceous earth. Yes – I had similar systems – stomach was hard as a rock. How about sauerkraut – have you tried that or any other similar vegetable probiotic?
So just finished weaning dose of prednisone 4 sinus infection after zpack didnt work
Im so bloated- fat& constipated- i always drink 64oz fluid anyway but havent been voiding much on steroids- this is 1st day off- im a nurse& ik what to tell my pts but it doesnt always work 4me- usu sweet potatoes & my usual cascara sagrada work w exercise
But nope- so im going 2 start probiotics although i eat yogurt everyday& eat sauerkraut- im miserable& i have a pt 2 c whos constipated-
Sad right- wish me well- i dont feel like going anywhere- im hesitant to take addl cascara but i feel like i gained 10# in a wk- plus output is so low rt constipation& the steroid
TY- never taking steroids again- upper resp clears on its own after 14 days- & w ABT& steroids it was almost as long😞

I would give it at least a couple of weeks ( the probiotics take a while to start showing results). The sauerkraut starts working almost instantly. And lots of fresh, filtered water will help expedite the process. Best of luck.
Hi Anju,
Thanks for quick response.
have been on vsl3 for more than 2 weeks
And a week on align
Still taking vsl3
But only probiotics is not solving my constipation
I have to use miralax powder also
If I don’t use miralax I will get sevre lower abdomen pain
Any idea on this?
Hi anuj,
Quick question
How many days were you on these probiotics?
Hi Anuj,
I really need your response as it helps a lot
My doctor did not even told me anything about probiotic while I am on antibiotics
After getting constipated and bloating with pain they suggested me vsl 3
Nothing else for bad yeast
How do you know that you have bad yeast?
What kind of process did you went through to get diagnosed for these?
Please help me!
Simplest way to tell if you have candida (bad yeast overgrowth) – try eating raw garlic. If raw garlic relieves your bloating, chances are that you have candida overgrowth – and S. Boulardi should help counter that..
In addition, just garlic supplements (or raw garlic) will help bring that under control. There are other ways to tell – if you have SEVERE yeast overgrowth, it starts showing up in various body parts (armpits, tongue…etc.). However, most people do not reach that SEVERE overgrowth stage – if they do, there is prescription anti-fungal medicine to fix that.

Sorry for the delayed response.
Try and eat lots of fermented foods – as outlined in this post:
http://www.akealife.com/blueprint-for-life/nutrition/fermented-foods/
To get your fiber (both soluble and insoluble), I would use food sources (greens and salads and boiled chickpeas and whole -grain breads….) – miralax by itself may not be sufficient. As for the VSL3 , though it is probably the best probiotic out there, try and rotate your probiotics (fresh home made yogurt works wonders – as does sauerkraut).
Best of luck.
I try to click on the link above…akeytolife and a page comes up saying coming soon…anyway you might have the info and be able to post it or know of a different address for it? Thanks!
Just wanted to say thanks for this post. I was on a powerful round of antibiotics treating pneumonia a few weeks ago and have been suffering from uncomfortable and sometimes painful bloating ever since. I hit the kefir and yogurt hard, but it just got worse. After reading your post, I think I have a yeast overgrowth issue, or just simply overdid it with the probiotics. I chopped up some garlic tonight and swallowed it like a pill and indeed found some relief a couple hours later.
Or you may have developed SIBO
great article. I agree that exercise does not help much in this situation – doesn’t increase appetite or relieve constipation. I’m going to try the betaine HCL. but I’ve found probiotics to exacerbate the constipation. Also doesn’t the saccharomyces Boulardi work against you if you suffer constipation – looks like it relieves diarrhea. Did you get help from a doctor? I’ve been frustrated finding a doctor who can help with this condition.
>> Also doesn’t the saccharomyces Boulardi work against you if you suffer constipation
The short answer is ‘maybe’. If ‘bad yeast’ is part of your problem, S. Boulardi will help by replacing the bad with the good. To determine if you have candida (bad yeast overgrowth), try the raw garlic experiment. If raw garlic relieves your bloating, chances are that you have candida overgrowth – and S. Boulardi should help counter that.
Yes – doctors may treat constipation superficially (without addressing it’s root cause), however my doc did recommend the ‘industrial strength probiotics (VSL 3). So, not all doctors are unaware of the severe side effect that antibiotics have on your gut flora.
Best of luck…(it truly sucks…have been there).
Thank you so much for this post! Finally an article that describes exactly what I’m experiencing. I am wondering if you altered your diet in anyway while doing this? Also, about how long did it take for bloating to dissipate?
I remember eating tons of sauerkraut- and homemeade yogurt (with some homemade rice). Salads with lots of greens as well.
Here is a post worth checking out:
http://www.akealife.com/blueprint-for-life/nutrition/fermented-foods/
With the sauerkraut ( and garlic), you should get quick (almost immediate) relief. The VSL3 and homemade yogurt takes a little longer to
work.
You should start feeling better (returning appetite) in a week or less. To fully restore your gut flora may take 4-6 weeks.
Best of luck.
I’ve been on two rounds of antibiotics – the second bout given, after having a bad experience with the first, a sulfur-based – which I didn’t handle well – then another to take care of the bad side-effects ! But now, I am stuck with a bloated, hard stomach – that is not going away ! So glad I started checking on-line and found your site … just opened a jar of sauerkraut and will try some of the other if this doesn’t do the job … bookmarking your site for future needs (never had this problem before with meds ! yuck !) Thanks !
Hey Anuj, amazing and helpful post. Was/am going Through the Same process. Just introduced raw kraut and s boullardi. What a difference, thanks to you. Currently taking Now Super Enzymes with 200mg of Betaine HCL, with every meal. Sometimes I need to take 3+ with a meal. Would you suggest a dedicated Betaine HCL with Pepsin, instead of the enzymes? Thank you Anuj!!!
If you feel that low acid is part of your problem, try taking a dedicated Betaine HCL supplement (with or without pepsin).
I remember taking BetainevHCL with pepsin before meals – and felt that it really helped.
Thank you Anuj for the quick reply. Did you ever try enzymes?
Aaron: I only tried enzymes briefly – and felt I had to take a lot to see any effect…I cannot say one way or another whether they helped. Sorry..
Hey Anuj, you’re awesome for the all the help! If you don’t mind, just one last question. Did you only take 1 single VSL#3 pill/ day, and that was effective enough? Just bought some VSL3 and am looking forward to some results.
Thank you in advance!
Aaron
Hi Aaron. Yes – I started with 1 a day – and stayed on 1 a day.
I also remember reading that it is better to swallow the powder inside the capsules (if capsules is what you have purchased). So – I would pop open the pill – and just swallow the contents. It really seemed to help me – much more so than other pro-biotics I had tried before.
Best of luck
Hey Anuj, I finally started your protocol a few days ago. I’ve started taking VSL3, NOW foods Betaine HCL, and Jarrow S.Boullardi and lots of raw kraut and yogurt. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Thank you so much. I know I said no more questions.. But what was it like when you had first started with this protocol? I’ve noticed weird things like some days needing more Betaine then others, and waking up at night with TONS of gurgling and some days have random bloating that comes out of nowhere. Anything similar? Thanks man. Ps I totally wiped out my bacteria from an antibiotic I had to take for a brown recluse bite, and never found a solution till I found you. You really know what you’re doing!!!
Sorry for the delay.. I think you need to give it a few weeks (3-4) before the VSL starts working. I am not sure of your Betaine experience..In my case, Betaine helped restore the gurgling sounds, but I don’t remember using it once I had the ‘gurgling’ return.
I can’t thank you enough! For weeks after taking antibiotics for a cracked, infected tooth, my digestion was terrible – a dead stop – and my stomach was hard as a rock and incredibly painful. Probiotics were not making a noticable difference. I found your site and it was the first one I’d seen mention yeast overgrowth in conjunction with low beneficial gut bacteria. I immediately raced…okay, waddled slowly…to the kitchen, and chewed two garlic cloves. Within an hour, relief started. A few days of garlic combined with a low sugar diet, and I feel significantly better – like a funtioning human again! Thank you!
Glad it helped. Yes , garlic was a lifesaver for me as well.
Best of luck
Hi! I realize this post is over a year old but just came across it and have a few questions. Hopefully I get a respond beings it’s been so long. 🙂 anyway..im.currently going thru the same yuck stomach issues and I was wondering would fresh minced garlic do the trick? Also..did u ever get the pain like under your breast ribs? Painful! Anyway..thanks in advance! Hope to hear back!
Rachelle: While I did not try minced garlic, I see no reason why the results would be any different, as long as it is fresh and not frozen. What I recall was a rock-hard stomach – which was also somewhat painful. Though, I do not specifically recall pain under the breast ribs, unless you are referring to the stomach region.
Yes -definitely give the garlic a chance to see if it is Candida. The results are almost instantaneously noticeable. The bloating reduces right after you chew on some garlic.
Hope you recover fast.
rofl I went into my kitchen and got some garlic before I even finished half these comments.
🙂
Thanks for this it’s very informative. I’m never taking amoxicillin again, constipation is so uncomfortable to deal with.
Dear Sir, What I find from this article that the symptoms are exactly the same which I am facing. Did tooth treatment in October 2016;took antibiotics; started bloating after 15 days or so; seen doctor in December 2016; done endoscopy; diagnosed with severe erosive duodenitis with small tiny ulcer; taken the treatment of H.Pylori for 7 days; after the treatment the Gut situation is worst. Feeling always acidic stomach; GERD symptoms; anxiety; feeling the situation of breathing issues; some time short breathiness; bronchitis attack panic etc. taking antacids presently. no relief. no appetite. will start the treatment as you did. it seems effective. No idea about sauerkraut. How to get it? will cabbage sauerkraut do? seen the process on YouTube. Please reply as to whether you too was feeling GERD symptoms? I mean always acidic stomach and heart burning etc. please help. Lost all the mood. Hope you will reply. Shall be grateful to you forever , if you provide me the informations about all the medication you used during the entire recovery and from where you got these all. I am from India. Thnx a lot.
Sorry to hear about your issues.
All the supplements I used to recover are listed in the article. Sauerkraut is easy to make with cabbage. Alternatively, in India, you can make something with carrots – called Kanji.
Your symptoms sound like severe acid reflux. For that, you can ask your doctor for prescription meds for acidity – like Omeprazole, Raciper etc. These usually address severe acidity issues.
Best of luck.
You recovered fully?
Seems like you are suffering just like me P K Singh. How did Anuj Varma’s treatment go with you?
I will start this treatment, it seems very convincing.
Dear Anuj Varma, my condition is the same, I am under lot of PPIS Esomeprazole 40mg twice a day and Omeprazole 40 MG twice a day.
But my stomach is not acidic. Probiotics usually make my stomach bloat even more including Sauerkraut.
Can you please help me?
Hello Anuj,
Thank you for the informative post, it is very helpful and I will be trying out your recommendations. Just wanted to find out, how much raw garlic and how much sauerkraut did you eat everyday? did you eat them alone or with meal (like in a sandwich etc.)?
Also, does eating pickled garlic count as raw garlic? Not sure if the acids from the pickling would affect the effectiveness of the garlic in terms of its purpose here in fighting yeast overgrowth?
Thanks!
I would eat the garlic raw ( not pickled). Quantity- just a few cloves (2-3) of garlic; lots of sauerkraut (I would eat 1 or 2 heaped tablespoons every few hours. And drink lots of fresh water.
As for with or without meal, I was having trouble digesting most meals – so mainly this was on an empty stomach .
Good luck
great, thanks for the quick reply!
Thanks for the article. It is probably one of the best practical article I have read on how to fix your gut (literally)!
Did you make your own sauerkraut or buy from store?
Thanks again for sharing this valuable knowledge
Meetul: I used store bought, organic sauerkraut. And it started helping right away. Hope it helps you as well, good luck!
Awesome article. I have been using a very similar protocol. VSL has been a lifesaver but is expensive as f*ck!!! Betaine HCL is definitely helping. Thanks for the tips 🙂
No doubt. VSL isn’t the cheapest product out there. But, along with the other items on the list above, it did seem to help.
Hi Anuj
Just wanted to ask can we take all these supplements while taking antibiotics. Will it help with bloating and give some relief?
The only probiotic that you can continue taking is S. Boullardi. It is actually a fungus (the good type) and is not affected by antibiotics. All other supplements will have limited effect while taking antibiotics.
Lucas from France
this topic is really useful
I began to restore my digestive system
but can you describe me The sensation of burning in the stomach before I go to the doctor
Where was the feeling burning sensation in the stomach? was it the highest stomach? was it severe
Hi there! I am glad I stumbled across your article. I just finished a round of antibiotics a week ago for a stomach ulcer. I have been experiencing the burning/itching sensation in my stomach/on my skin, as well as constipation and hard stomach. I started probiotics two days ago and it has helped with the constipation so far, but still experiencing the burning sensation. I am going to try sauerkraut and garlic! Can you use store bought sauerkraut?
Yes. I used store bought organic sauerkraut.
Okay! I couldn’t find any today but will look tomorrow. I did try Garlic but could not get past eating a couple small bites. The taste was awful!
I never did an round antiobiotic ever, but i have all the symptoms of a
gut bacteria imbalance, i went to doctors 10 times and did all of kinds of exams and switch of doctors several times and all the exams i did (colonscopies, endoscopies, stools, blood…) everything come back normal, just ascaris eggs 2 years ago, but i still have all the symptoms. i used to drink a lot of tap water 4 years ago this could have killed gut bacteria?
And recently 6 months ago i was dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety. what do you say ?
I never used probiotics or eat fermented foods .
On and off antibiotics for 3 years for Lyme
Feeling much better but literally cannot poop
I have used VSL and boullardi in the past
Now I am wondering if the probiotics are contributing to constipatation
Kept this under control for years but towards the end was slacking on the probiotics
Don’t know if I should go back on or just give my poor body a break?
Have you tried Sauerkraut (I find organic veggies as probiotics have fewer side effects than capsules). Yes – too much of probiotics can cause bloating and related issues. Also, drink plenty of fresh water.
@anuj Varma I came off a 14 day hpylori meds about three weeks ago and for the past two weeks I been dealing with stomach bloating issues it never usually goes away but sometimes it gets bad and sometimes it doesn’t but it’s always there…I stopped taking my probioitcs two days ago to see if that will work..keep in mind I didn’t really have any stomach bloating till I started the antibiotics
Dear Anuj Varma,
My condition is the same, I took two course of Antibiotics and for bloating which made my condition eve. worse
I am under lot of PPIS Esomeprazole 40mg twice a day and Omeprazole 40 MG twice a day, but my stomach is not acidic.
Your article and advice is superb!
but probiotics usually make my stomach bloat even more including Sauerkraut. S Boulardi also causes bloating.
Can you please help me?
Thanks for the post. I will be trying some of these things myself.
I was on a round of penicillin and then clindamycin for a difficult throat infection. After the infection resolved, I was given permission by my doctor to discontinue the clindamycin early (having a total 5 days instead of the normal 10). However, I have been having bad constipation ever since, and this was about 3 months ago now. At this point I only have a bowel movement every 2-3 days and feel generally uncomfortable most of the time.
I am taking Culturelle every day and drinking fermented cabbage juice along with other kombuchas, getting lots of fluids and fiber. Nothing seems to really help so far but I will keep working through it.
Hi I came across this after having symptoms following antibiotics. I was taking doxycycline for 2 weeks after a doctor diagnosed me with rosacea. I went to see a dermatologist and they said it was adult acne and I could stop taking the doxycycline. about a week later, I started having bloating, gas, stomach acid reflux, and now constipation. I have also loss of appetite. 2 days ago I started eating natural yoghurt, and taking antacids which has brought some relief. I am also only eating plain foods from the BRAT diet, for instance I managed one slice of plain toast, a banana and a small yoghurt last night. How much sauerkraut should I eat daily, and raw garlic?. Thank you.
I used to take a couple of spoonfuls of sauerkraut – 2 to 3 times a day. Raw garlic, again, as needed. If you are feeling relief with raw garlic, keep taking it at least twice a day.
I thought I was going nuts with all these symptoms after taking Keflex for UTI..that started CT scan at end of antibiotics said I had moderate constipation, and I was fine before..all these people suffering what I am, at least now I can try sauerkraut and garlic. I’ve got the probiotics..thanks..I have been afraid to eat because of the pain, so boring diet. Next thing, colonoscopy..yuck!
Anuj,
Your post is enlightening. I have had severe bloating and appetite loss/weight loss/low moods after an interval post antibiotics – exact experience twice over 2 years (but no constipation).
I repeatedly asked my gastro doctor, is this bloating an effect of antibiotics?, and he refused. He also discouraged Sauerkraut.
I am taking Providac probiotic and Acogut for kinetic movement of food through the gut. Both have helped. But no gurgling sounds, still stray incidences of bloating/belching. I dont want to stop acogut because its proven to help. How then do I integrate your suggestions?
Thanks!
Harsh
Hi Anuj,
Thanks for a very informative post.
I have the exact symptoms! And twice after antiobiotics recently.
I was once prescribed strong enzymes, which helped for a few days, then I was prescribed Acotiamide (for food movement), which continues to help.
But I still have bloating, but several hours after a meal – every few days.
Some of those meds are not available in India, so I was wondering if its possible to get this going with just the natural recommendations from you.
Thanks.
Hi anuj,
Thanks to your post, my recovery post antibiotics has been better.
1) when should I stop taking yeast?
2) does yeast from beer affect this really bad?
Thanks.
Hi Anuj,
I have been following several of your suggestions and they have been very helpful.
But I still wake up in the morning with a bit of burping and acid reflux/sore throat?
How do I fix that? The doctor prescribed an antacid.
Also, How long did you continue to have the yeast, the probiotics, and the DGL? Sauerkraut?
Thanks!
Hi Anuj,
I was on the same situation after one round of Azythromacin for what the doc believed to be acute bronchitis. After a few days on that I started to feel full quickly, really bloated, and heavy. I didn’t know I was constipated until my gut had a almost a complete shut down. I did a virtual consultation with a doc and he prescribed omeprazole and a second round of Flagyl. He thought I might have bad bacterial growth. My journey might be helpful for those going through the same thing, so I thought I would post.
I am 25, work in an office so I sit down most of the day. My diet didn’t contain a lot of fiber, I didn’t drink enough water during the day and tons of stress from work. I was not set up for success when I was prescribed the antibiotics. I really believe, that this my lifestyle had big role for the slow breakdown of my gut, so antibiotics isn’t exactly ALL to blame.
Looking back I would strongly advice people against antibiotics unless you absolutely HAVE TO. I found that my cough went away a few weeks after, it was a viral cough so antibiotics didn’t make a difference but they created a much bigger problem for me. Thanks to my relentless google searches I found your post, and helped me a lot, but I would also STRONGLY advice against thinking the internet can properly diagnose you. It can’t, only a doctor can. I was so depressed, I would spend all night searching for the culprit, I even thought I had ovarian cancer.
After taking omeprazole for 2 weeks, eating bland diet, walking more, stressing A LOT and not seeing improvement, I knew I had to make another appointment with the doc. A family member had been diagnosed with lung cancer two years ago today. So for me, I knew I need to ask for an x ray and bloodwork to rule anything out.
Bloodwork came out clean, they checked liver, kidneys, pancreas all great. X-ray showed that I was severely constipated which would explain, bloating, occasional nausea, feeling full quickly. All the things! It was a huge relief that it wasn’t the big C word but I know I need to change my lifestyle.
I have never in my life been “severely constipated” I didn’t even know what that was. Doctor prescribed an OTC laxative, tons of water, exercise, and she prescribed anti anxiety meds with low gastro side affects.
I am working my way towards getting better with my constipation. I hope this was helpful for you guys. I know that your post was the only thing that made me feel not crazy about my gut.
Hi Anuj, thanks for the great post. This post exactly describes what I am going through. I was prescribed Antibiotics to treat UTI for a week but even after a week of treatment with Antibiotics I developed severe constipation problems. I was bit slow to make the connection between my constipation and the Antibiotics so I picked up some Stool softner from the Pharmacy. But then I somehow felt I am not treating the cause and only treating the symptom as the constipation problem seemed to persist day after day even with high fiber plant based diet, lot of water consumption and exercise. Thank god I was lucky to have a smart doctor who already prescribed me Saccharomyces Boulardii as I consulted with him n this problem. On addition to that started taking Sauerkraut as I live in Germany and Sauerkraut is a normal everyday food here. Now the condition is getting better. This post gives me clarity on what is happening and thereby preventing me from panicking. Thanks again for sharing!
Glad it helped. Yes – Sauerkraut and S.Boullardi are super helpful.
I found your blog post after two rounds of antibiotics (the second round being Cipro) completely wrecked my gut. I had extreme, painful bloating, pressure, and absolutely no appetite and tried everything I could think of on my own with little to no relief until I came upon your post. I followed your protocol and within 24 hours I started to feel better. After about 1 week on the protocol I feel almost 100% better. My question is how long after you felt better did you continue to follow this protocol and what is your long-term maintenance plan? Now that my gut is feeling better (no more bloating or pain) and my appetite is restored, I would like to know how many more days/weeks/or months I should continue this daily regimen? Then once that time has passed what should I continue to do/take on a daily basis to keep the homeostasis that I have achieved? I too have suffered respiratory symptoms in the past (before this antibiotic induced episode) that I feel have been due to either GERD or reflux issues.
Thank you for this amazing post, it literally saved me from going to urgent care and gave me such almost immediate relief.
I would slowly taper the stronger probiotics – like the VSL3. I also stopped the Betaine HCL once my appetite returned. On the S. Boullardi, I kept taking it long term – and still take it (one or two every other day for long term maintenance). Drink lots of fresh water. With each meal, be mindful of consuming some good probiotic (plain yogurt, pickles, sauerkraut etc.).
That’s all I did/do for long term. I was cautious of keeping some of these handy (sauerkraut and s. boullardi) whenever I had to face any future antibiotic dose. Glad you’re mostly out of it.
Thank you for the reply. All great information. I cannot believe that I never heard of S. Boullardi before reading your blog and I am someone who takes supplements/vitamins on a regular basis. I will continue to take that every other day as suggested (and maybe it will also protect me during my annual Cabo San Lucas, Mexico trip as I always get a bubbly tummy when traveling to Mexico).
I will probably also keep the Betaine HCL on hand for times when I am eating a larger, fat and protein rich meal.
Next time I need to take antibiotics I will know just what to do. That experience was the worst and I NEVER want to go through that again!
Also, sauerkraut is now a staple on my grocery list! Who knew it would work this good?!?
Thank you again for your amazing advice. I so appreciate feeling that my health has been restored 🙂
Elizabeth, you mentioned that you went through 2 rounds of antibiotic, the 2nd one being Cipro. If you don’t mind me asking, how long did you have to take Cipro? I just went through a 6 week course of Levofloxacin 500mg per day. My symptoms started around 7-10 days after finishing. However, I mostly feel the bloating, gas, pressure in the right lower abdomen. Did you feel this all over? Thank you.
Hi Anuj, Thank you for this detailed post. I finished a 6 week course of Levofloxacin about 3 weeks ago. I was taking a probiotic pill everyday while taking the antibiotic, but stopped as soon as I finished the antibiotic, as I didn’t realize that you need to keep taking it. About 7-10 days after finishing, I started to get cramps and massive air pockets in the lower right abdomen and pelvic region, bloating, and sometimes cracking sounds. Also, it seems that this would get progressively worse as the day went by. I didn’t know what to think, and actually went to see a family physician and a gastroenterologist. I had bloodwork test, and both of the doctors don’t seem to be concerned since I am a generally healthy 40 year old male and all the bloodwork is normal (no inflammation, normal electrolytes, no Anemia, etc). However, none of them told me that something like this could happen after going through antibiotics, especially a 6 week course. I’ve taken 7-10 days of antibiotics before, but never developed these kind of issues. I started to follow your regimen a few days ago, and seems like it’s helping a bit, but have yet to see major improvement. When you went through this, was your bloating and gas in different spots, or did you notice that it would sometimes concentrate in specific spots? Mine, seems that I feel them in lower abdomen and pelvic, but mostly on the right side. Again, thank you so much!
I forgot to write in the original post that both doctors said that something in the bloodwork would be off if something serious was going on. Also, I had the bloodwork test a day after finished the antibiotic. Both doctors said that the antibiotic does not affect the result of the blood test. Again, thank you.
Hi Anuj, Thank you for your detailed post. I finished a 6 week of Levofloxacin about 3.5 weeks ago. I was taking a probiotic everyday while taking the antibiotic, however, I stopped once I finished the antibiotic, as I didn’t know I should continue. About 7-10 days after finishing the antibiotic, I started to get cramps, major air pockets in the lower center/right abdomen and pelvic region, sometimes pressure in the butt, and sometimes loud cracking in the abdomen. It seems that these would get worse progressively as the day went by. I didn’t know what to think. I went to see my family physician as well as a gastroenterologist. Furthermore, I had a bloodwork test. Both of the doctors said that they are not concerned that something serious is going on since I am a generally a healthy 40 year old male, and all of the bloodwork test came back normal (no inflammation, normal electrolytes, no anemia, etc). They both indicated that something would be off in the blood if something serious was going on. I found your post a week ago, and started to follow your regimen a few days ago. I am not constipated, so I am not taking Betaine HCL. I think I am starting to see some improvement, but nothing major yet. When you were going through this, did you have bloating all over, or was it sometimes in specific regions? Also, I am sometimes feeling like I have to stop and breath deeper. Did you experience this at all? Again, thank you so much.
Yes – the breathing, like I pointed out in the post, was a major symptom for me. I even started taking my inhaler at one point. When I figured out that my problem was probiotic related (and not lung related), I focused on getting my digestion going (garlic, s.boullardi, VSL…these all helped right away). This addressed the breathing issues as well. That’s not to say to make light of your respiratory issues – if that’s a concern, you ought to get that checked out independent of your digestive issues.
Hello Anuj,
Thanks for your informative post on gut issues.
I am going through severe constipation issues after strong antibiotic(Amoxicillin) treatment for H-Pylori 7 weeks back. This severe constipation is causing Anal fissures which are making my life difficult.
Currently I am taking Miralax everyday but no improvement.
As you suggested I’ll try Organic Sauerkraut, raw garlic and coconut water. Since this post is little old I just want to check if any new organic probiotics you suggest or should Yakult probiotics works?
Thanks once again for your suggestions.
Moiz
Hi Moiz, I am currently in the same you were when you posted this in 2021 (constipated 6+ weeks after antibiotic). Are you now doing better after trying what was outlined in this article?
Hi Anju,
I was on two different antibiotics for almost a month. About a week after I stopped taking them. Everything started to go downhill. First thing was not being able to poop. And then almost like a little bursts of gas pain everywhere. I started immediately on probiotics but not the ones you recommended. That seem to make things so much worse. I had so much gas I felt like I was going to explode. Sometimes not even being able to button my pants. I had this rock hard sensation underneath my belly button. I know when I was on the anabiotic‘s I noticed thrush in my mouth. Which is now gone. But I’m wondering what else is still going on. I feel like I’m so sensitive to probiotics but don’t know what else to do.
My question is about the probiotics you recommend I’ve heard that VSL3 are the best but there seems to be some controversy over whether they are the original or not. It seems there was some sort of court battle over them. Are you familiar with this? I’m trying to figure out if you were taking the original formula or not.
I’ve tried the coconut Kiefer and I was able to get movement but not without gas pain. Honestly I cannot believe what is happening to my body after antibiotics. It’s definitely causing me some depression. I am not living a normal life right now. I keep coming back and reading your posts and I am so thankful that it’s here. Now if I could just feel better.
Thank you so much for this information! I had severe bloating and constipation after being prescribed Augmentin. I followed many of your suggestions and now one month later I am finally feeling back to normal. I really appreciate you taking the time to share what worked for you.
