- Congress still doesn’t get the anti-corruption movement
Shortly after press conference by Hazare and his team, ministers in the drafting committee P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal and Salman Khurshid hit back at the civil society, making it clear that the government will not succumb to threats.
Home minister Chidambaram said, “I don’t think anywhere in the world, fasting is the way to draft a bill.”
Maybe not- but maybe it should be. Fasting is a non-violent, soul-driven way of protesting. The only other option is violent protest. Maybe Chidambaram would like to see that instead of fasting. Surely, if the Congress continues to ignore the will of a frustrated population, violent revolt is what they will get. Right now, Chidambaran should be overjoyed that ‘fasting’ is the chosen mode of displaying dissatisfaction.
He asserted that many of the demands of the Hazare team cannot be accepted because a structure parallel to the government cannot be allowed.
Again, either Chidambaram is stupid or just playing stupid. This is not a parallel structure. People protesting in the streets cannot be declared a parallel structure. If anything, this is a clean-up squad – ready to remove the filth that is the Indian Government.
