Domain Name Registrars
These are some registrars that our company has encountered issues with. Non responsiveness, renewal without prior warnings or notification, inability to transfer out domains.
Namecheap
Cons – Upcoming Renewals and Transfer Out Restrictions
They make sure you DO NOT know about upcoming renewals. They have the functionality built in – but it doesn’t show upcoming renewals. This happened to us on SIX occasions. Three Support tickets – no response, that addressed these concerns. Simply a generic ‘We send out renewal notices for all upcoming expirations’… This is not accurate. If you have a domain set to auto-renew – YOU DO NOT see an upcoming notice for that domain’s renewal. All you see is a ‘invoice processed’
Difficulty Transferring Out of Namecheap
They will not let you easily transfer names out of namecheap. No reason is provided except – This name is not eligible for transfer right now.
They are more expensive on renewals than the competitors. This is probably why they make it next to impossible to transfer out domains.
On one of my transfers, which I conducted well before domain expiration, I waited and waited. One fine day, they informed me that the name had expired! I showed them the transfer out confirmation from namecheap and the payment receipt from the new registrar (see the chat below). Turns out, they send you ANOTHER email, with an option to ‘expedite the transfer’ or not. And if you were thinking you were already done, your transfer would take forever….Pointless process flow, just frustrating.
GoDaddy
I transferred everything out of GoDaddy years ago. Their unethical business practices are legendary. Persistent upsells, unsolicited calls, unreliable uptime on hosting plans – the list goes on an on
This list will constantly be updated.
