Reset an AWS root account password
To reset a root account password – when you have access to the associated email
1. Open aws.amazon.com, and then choose Sign In to the Console.
Note: If you’re using a new browser, the button will read Sign Up instead. Choose Sign Up and then choose Sign in to an existing AWS account.
2. Type your root email address or account number.
3. Choose Next.
4. Choose Forgot your password? to request a password reset email.
An email message with further instructions will be sent to the email address that is currently associated with the account.
What if I don’t have access to the root account associated email?
If you no longer have access to that email address, you won’t be able to receive a password reset email. So – what do you do? You need to open a support ticket with AWS.

When you contact Customer Service, you must provide the following information:
- All the details that are listed on the account, including your full name, phone number, address, email address, and last four digits of the credit card. You might need to create a new AWS account for the purpose of contacting Customer Service, but this is necessary to assist in the investigation of your request.
- The reason that you’re unable to access the email account to receive password reset instructions.
- Also request that the support team delete any accounts that you are not using. It’s a good idea not to have open accounts in your name that could result in charges to you.
