Responsibility – as a form of mindfulness
The world runs on the shoulders of responsibility. Take out responsible people from the mix and nothing would work. All hell would break loose.
Responsibility is the one characteristic that I like to see in grown-ups (kids need to be taught this quality).
When you get tagged as ‘responsible’, it means people are willing to rely on you. For little things. For big things. Not because you are super talented or super smart. But because you have that one rare quality – that you will do what you promise to do.
Often, Buddhists (and other world-forsakers) are labeled as being irresponsible. This is incorrect. It is not that they are irresponsible, it is just that they have reduced the number of things that they take upon their shoulders. Since they have few attachments, there are fewer things that are expected of them. For e.g. most monks do not have a family, hence, they have fewer family responsibilities.
This does not mean they are IRRESPONSIBLE people. If responsibility is thrust upon them, chances are they may well deliver on their task.
In my experience, mindfulness is a quality that enhances the responsible nature of a person. It makes one more responsible – simply because one learns the value of filtering out unwanted thoughts while executing a task. Responsibility is a by-product of mindfulness.
