The need to believe in a religion
The two extremes are traditional faith – and extreme rationalism.
Rationalism – Let man apply his knowledge in the right way and all the evils of illiteracy, poverty etc. will be eliminated. Religion is nothing but barbarism – according to the rationalist.
Religion – Claims that the only path for mankind out of destruction is to seek solace and comfort in the Church. Renewal of faith will restore the ‘drive’ of mankind.
Between these two extremes is a middle ground – those that believe that mankind has ‘outgrown’ the doctrines of the Church – but are still convinced that a religious ‘outlook’ I is necessary – as necessary as the belief in the authenticity of science.
